In addition to portraiture, I also do birth photography. I do quite a bit of it as a doula, of course, but I also do it outside of my doula work from time to time.
Last weekend, the day before the now legendary snowstorm of March 2009, I was invited to document the birth of a dear friend of mine. It was her third child, second daughter and special for reasons beyond the obvious. Julie’s mother, Teresa Howard, delivered Julie’s daughter up into her hands. The large photo below captures the instant Julie is pulling her up into her arms from inside her body-and the joy that instant brought her. In the background, Julie’s eldest child is present and watching as her baby sister entered the world. Her words were nothing short of breathtaking that day…she said her mother was giving the world a brand new person, and later, she told her little brother on the phone that one day she too would do what her mother had just done.
What an amazing, inspiring and empowering day that was for all of us in the room. I was and remain humbled and honored to have been invited to attend. It was my sincere pleasure to be able to document the occasion for their family.
My birth photography, by it’s nature, is documentary-style. It is not portraiture. The photos are raw, real and maybe not technically perfect. They allow you to experience the moment at it’s essence and evoke powerful emotions.
I hope you enjoy the rare treat in this powerful series of images. Julie’s birth is an example to us all of what birth can be when approached with joy and humor in place of fear.
